Young Girl in February Drizzle

February chill and drizzle

The type of day that could steal your sizzle

Through rain blurred glass, I see mostly grey and brown

A young girl walks home from school in a beat part of town

Her skin is the same color as the bark of the leaf-less stark trees

Is opportunity elusive, or does it treat some like disease?

What will this world do to her mettle?

I say a prayer that the trolls don’t sour her kettle

Brew strength, restraint, resiliency, and compassion, my unknown world mate

I may never know of your path or hear of your fate

But maybe you’ll be the next world leader, or sage?

Maybe you’ll bellow out music and light hearts from a stage!

Or maybe you’ll be just an ordinary lady,

But you can be a good one, and that is premium!  Nothing shady

There are bigots, illusions, phantoms, and fences

That people don’t care about you-may sometimes seem the consensus

But there is enough that do

To this, I believe true!

And you don’t need to create someone to love while still just a girl

You’ll be a better mother once you’ve grown and honed your own pearl

Turn those irritants in life into a beauty inside

Tough times never stop coming like the change of the tide

I don’t know your place in the world, but I know that you have one

You might feel like no one, but my friend you ARE someone

You’re as important as anyone else here on earth

Don’t let anyone out there diminish your worth

I say hello and goodbye in my afternoon drive by

Today’s clouds will drift off to bring a sunny clear blue sky

But we have to try

To keep the spirit of empathy from running into short supply
